the problem began yesterday, around the time when my avast trial ran out, i kept getting error messages reading something along the lines of 'this webpage is not available'- Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET) on google chrome and similar messages on firefox and internet explorer. about a half hour afterwards everything started to freeze up on me, starting with the start menu. i thought restarting my laptop would fix the problem but it just made it worse because after starting it up and entering the password all that came up was a black screen and my mouse cursor. i then restarted my laptop again and ran it in safe mode. i downloaded malwarebytes and ran a quick scan. it found two issues and quarantined them. i thought that that had fixed the problem but apparently not. i then downloaded avg and it seems as though i can't start the scan because it's in safe mode.

i hope that there's a solution to this which doesn't involve me shelling out $250 to buy a copy of windows 7

    Hello,

I would recommend you start by removing the expired trial, the malwarebytes and the avg. Having multiple protection programs has been known to cause connectivity issues. I also experienced a multitude of times when an expired program (most notably older versions of Norton, McAfee and Trend Micro) causing network connectivity issues after they expire. I'm not sure why this happens but every time I removed the expired program in this scenario, and restart the machine, things would run fine.

Hope your solution is as simple as this, you can safely reinstall some new protection if this resolves the issue.

    Regards,

If you don't play games, you may consider switching to Linux. It's free and once you are logged on to the internet, you wouldn't know the difference except that it works faster.

Normally viruses wont stop you booting, i would think there is another issue here.

Boot into safe mode and do a file system repair of the hard drive.

Also, what version of windows are you using?

Once while browsing internet I also got the Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET). So did scan for malware and Found 6 instances of malware, all in mozilla related folders, removed them. Replaced Hosts file using NoAdHosts. Repaired Winsock errors using WinsockXPFix. Checked all internet settings, (proxy etc) Rebooted Router and checked settings.

    Everything is working fine now.

I agree with that, one I first had AVG because I got recommend to them from someone can't remember who and after the trial ran out I started experiencing the same problems you are. I downloaded Malwarebytes and shocking that it removed over 400 viruses. After all those viruses were removed I was never going back I HIGHLY recommend trying out Malwarebytes.
