Hello,I've ordered it and I'm like a big excited kid waiting for my new laptop 160gig internal hard drive to be delivered. When I install I'm using the opportunity to kick Microshaft out once and for all and install ubuntu. The only problem is that I have a couple of tasks I need to do on a regular basis, such as use editing software to update my Pronto (user design remote control) that speaks via USB and update my satellite box via a NUL 9pin cable, I will also in the near future want to connect the computer to a webcam attached to my telescope, I'm a man with many hobbies. My problem is that most of these activities are mainly catered for XP operating system software but I don't want to be held prisoner to XP just because of this. Once I've installed ubuntu I'm thinking of installing VMWare and wondered what the many of you out there, that have far more experience than I, can advise on how competent this software is for running XP programmes within Linux that require to pass on information to connected hardware. Please don't advise a dual boot option as I am determined to make the break and ubuntu will be my one and only operating system. Thanks

I don't think you will be able to achieve what you want unless you can get Linux drivers for it really.
Why not just have a dual boot?

I'd say your best bet would be to use W.I.N.E.. It's an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix. Go here to check it out: http://www.winehq.org/

Thanks serverguy, but as I said I realy don't want to dual boot. The VMWare is a virtual desktop that you can install XP to and I've since learnt that you can also install drivers to it so why wouldn't you think it would work. It just seems to me that if I get on the computer to do a 10 min job it takes 30 mins because this updates and that updates at the moment and that is what I want to get away from. The talk is ubuntu may have problems at first with setup but once done the updates ar far more logical and do what you tell it as opposed to doing stuff behind your back. I think the VMWare may be the answer to my problems but as you say what you do I would like to know the reasons why.
