Default Newbie question.

hi all, hope this the right place to post.im asking a question on behalf of my sister.she has a home computer connected to ntl broadband.she rang me up today saying she has lost her connection to the net but can still send and recieve emails.she cannot access her favourites or do any searches.i got her to check her cookie settings but that made no difference.could it be a problem with her norton security not allowing her connection.im pretty new to computers so said to her i would ask on this forum for her.anyone got any ideas would be most welcome, cheers.

Hi Dasray

Welcome back

If she can get email then she has NOT lost her net connection.
Just what exactly is she seeing and which email client is she using?
Is she using IE or another browser?
Although it galls me to say this, has she tried re-installing Norton?
Is it normal Norton or Norton Internet Security which incorporates a firewall amongst other things?

hi wolfe, ive just spoke to her and she says its IE for the emails and normal norton.her story goes that last night she went to download a freebie screensaver and norton showed up two threats which it cured.she later noticed she could not access any sights on the net but could still email.she tried a system restore but that didnt help.(dont know if that would work anyway).the computer is only a few months old.its starts up and loads windows as normal.any clues ?.cheers dasray.

Default Newbie question.

Freebie Screensavers can be wick with Spyware, i never use them.

Tell her to re-boot and to press F8 continually to get into Safe Mode.
In there, tell her to choose "Last known good configuration".

What form of anti spyware/malware does she run and what Firewall?

hi all, just got back in touch with my sister about her computer problem and nothing seems to have worked.she tells me that the only way she can use the web browser is if you turn the norton firewall off altogether.even on the lowest settings.anyone got any ideas.could she use the windows firewall and turn off the norton firewall.cheers das.

Default Newbie question.

Hi Das
In theory Norton should turn the Windows AV off.
My recommendation would be to uninstall Norton and get Avast as an Anti Virus program.
Here are the sites for Norton uninstall and Avast.
Norton Uninstall.
Avast.

Avast along with AVG will scan the system and point out any problems Das.
Don't run 2 AV's at the same time though.
Your sis also needs to obtain Spybot ( Search & Destroy) and AdAware.
Just because an AV is free people frown on them, this is unjustified.
You must obtain the Norton Uninstaller though.
