Absolutely open source for many reasons, number one being cost.
The problem comes when you have hundreds of PC's in your company, finding someone to resolve problems with it. Microsoft have trained many people to maintain their products but finding someone to look after an Open Source software suite is much harder. |

I have a good example with the recent forum upgrade.

When i installed the open source free forums i came across pretty much no support when i wanted to ad seo mods etc. Vbulletin however is no 1 on support as its paid and only modded by other paid organisations like vBSEO. From a support angle I prefer having the support rather than saving on the price. Dave. My System: Hybr!d

I use Vbulletin and with a miriad of hacks and mods, turned it into a fully working website, it's a very fine piece of software.
I can agree with Dave on the forums issue, the free software cannot be supported as well as paid for. Think about it, people at Vb are paid to fix our problems, people at Open source projects are not. They solve bugs in their spare time. |

Open source technology can be embraced if budget is a constraint. Problems mentioned about open source are more on web scripts. There are stable open source applications with popular proprietary counterpart. For instance GIMP for Photoshop, Linux for Windows, MYSQL for MSSQL, and many more. The growing popularity of open source is reducing the cost of proprietary applications. The bottom line is open source and proprietary softwares can coexist.

I like open source because I like that "do it yourself" side it has. Lately, companies are comming up to cover that empty space in the service and they are also supporting the developments via donations which is great.
Nothing is really free, you have a cost on money or time. It is good to have the choice. Sandra.:) |

In a way I like both! Because, if I were to install a Linux OS on my computer then it would be a challenge because I would have little support.
If I were to install Windows OS then I know that I would be backed up and I couldn't go wrong! Both have their up and downsides! |
