I do hate to take away from your dream of having an XP laptop but my laptop which is about a year old now wont let me install XP because of a need for SCSI drivers, which come on a floppy disk, which my laptop doesnt have a drive for. So you might want to see if XP can be installed on your system before getting it all prepared to find out theres nothing you can do with it =)

If Disk Mangement shows 2 x partitions, totalling 149gb then this what you have.

I have no idea why My computer is only showing 98gb for the C: Drive .... are you sure that's not the free space ?

In either event, it doesn't sound as though you were successful in shrinking the C: Drive .... if you had, Disk Management would be showing unallocated space. So your next step is to start again.

I never use Vista's built in Disk Mangement tools to create, shrink or extend volumes, as they tend to be a bit flakey in my opinion.
If you can, it is much better to use a third party program, like Acronis Disk Director, which behaves nicely in Vista and XP.
