I want to build a computer for a buddy of mine but I'm going to use a older windows xp home edition cd. now when it ask me to activate it I'm sure it will have me pay something because I've already registered and activated under that serial number.
Does anyone know how much that will end up being?

You will need to purchase a new serial number (licence key) to activate windows because if you inform microsoft that you already have windows activated under that serial number they will tell you that either you need to uninstall windows of the previous machine (that is if it is not an oem version) or buy a new licence. Best of looking on ebay seen windows xp (new and sealed) go for £12 upwards

You can get an OEM XP Home license for about £50 here, so I guess around $50 there. If you are transferring the license to another PC there is no problem. When you ring M$ there is an automated activation system. If you keep XP on the old PC then you will keep having trouble running automatic updates.
