Default Problems after running XP disk cleanup

After running disk cleanup, I cannot restore system to earlier state, the internal DVD drive is inoperative (it doesn't recognize any disk entered, but did spin when I unsuccessfully attempted to back up some files), and disk defragmenter is unable to defragment the drive (it stops at 13% leaving about 30% of the drive fragmented). I think it has something to do with disk cleanup manipulating or replacing some registry entries, perhaps, but I have little experience in that area. I've tried a few different things, downloading and running ccleaner, diskeeper lite, deleting the drive from device manager, then restarting, but nothing is having any effect. If anyone can offer any suggestions, please do. I'm open to any ideas anyone may have, and I appreciate your help. Thanks for reviewing my case.

Try to run the disk check utility.

Stsrt > Run > type CHKDSK > click OK

If nothing turns up there try this.

Start > run > type chkdsk /f > click OK << Notice the space between chkdsk and /f. You may need the Windows CD to complete this option.
