Default Problems with music/video files and sound!

Hey, new to this forum and having issues. When I try to open music or video files, I get an error saying that it is being used by another source or incorrect proxy settings. Sound also does not work in games, but works in web browser. Any ideas? Thanks, help is appreciated.

It's an ongoing problem through several power-downs, and yes my volume levels are all at max. I'm pretty sure it Isn't being used by another source, unless some background application is somehow accessing the file type at all times I guess.... Maybe anti virus active protection is scanning these file types for some reason? IDK I have Avast.

Default Problems with music/video files and sound!

Lets see what all is running that may be causing this.

Download and rename HijackThis (HJT)
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
  • From the desktop open HiackThis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
  • HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the log in your post.
    • Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Default Problems with music/video files and sound!

I don't see any malware but there are a few empty entries we can clean up.

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only then place a check mark next to:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {92780B25-18CC-41C8-B9BE-3C9C571A8263} - (no file)

Close all windows except for HijackThis and click Fix checked

Exit Hijackthis.

What music player do you use and have you tried any other ones?

Have you gotten all of the Windows updates?

Default Problems with music/video files and sound!

Gave me an error when I tried to fix these entries, saying there was an argument. Anyway, I use Windows Media Player 11, and I've tried using Winamp with no success. There are a few optional updates; only one for vista, but I'll install it and see if it helps.
