I do quite a lot of stuff with downloading files, moving files, deleting files, and i find that i spend at least 3 days every month or so to do the following:
1)CCleaner. Kill excess files and reg clean-up 2)Disk Clean up. Remove more excess files. 3)DataRecovery. I use this to permanently remove all those 'deleted' files. 4)Full on disk check. The kind that makes you restart to do, goes into the blue screen of checking. 5)Defrag. So all the file stuff is faster. This routine works, but it can take up to 3 days. steps 1-3 take (on a bad day) up to one hour. step 4 on the other hand can take up to 1-2 hours. step 5 can take 1/2 hour, to 3 hours. Now, I do steps 4 and 5 when im at school or at night. but it still can take 2-3 days to do all of the stuff. Is there any way i can schedule check disk and defrag? Thanks. |

Defraggler has a scheduler. It's what I use. Faster than the Windows built in.

IMHO, running chkdsk every month is not really essential. Run it only if you suspect there is a problem with the file system.
And when you do run it, run it manually. Start it before you go to bed and let it run overnight. As for defrag, you don't need to waste any time at all on it if you go with an automatic defrag utility. I use one called Diskeeper 2008, and it defrags the drives in the background automatically whenever it's required and when the computer is idle. Scheduling a defrag is never required. Works very nicely I must say. It's not free, but you can download free trial versions from the Diskeeper site. Ultimately all that's on my weekly maintenance list is a disk cleanup and a virus scan, for a total of just an hour. |
