Default Slooooooow Computer!

Hi all,
My pc;s preformance has reduced over the last couple of weeks, its a dell dimension 3000. I did have norton or symantec but didnt renew it some time back. I ve had free versions AVG and zone alarm for protection. So please what can i do to improve its speed but can i do it with free soft ware or keepin the costs minimal, I know very little tech stuff.
Thanks

also after a cleanup and maybe a disk defrag

maybe tern services and drivers off you don't use like printer/fax drivers removing fonts and leaving one or 2 styles improves boot up time and performance dramatically
