Default vista burning

does it actually crash?

i got vista and it takes FOREVER to burn and appears to have crashed, but it can take hours for a dvd to burn

service pack 1 which is soon to be released may fix this as they have increased 'file transfer speed'

whether that includes burning i don't know

Use Nero Essentials 7. I got it off Ebay ! Its brilliant and definitely Vista Home premium compatible. I use it for burning CD's but never used it for DVD's,mind.

As far as I know, Vista hasn't got any Burning problems, but it's always best to use a dedicated burning program. The facility in Vista (and XP) is not the best of applications and not many folk rely on it.

If the system is crashing or freezing, it may be that your friend is using cheap generic disks, which are not compatible or not being read properly by the LG drive. The system then may get lost and end up in a loop.

My advice would be :

1. Get some proven disks, like Verbatims

2. Get a copy of Nero or similar ....... trial copy can be downloaded to test from Nero.com

Burning will max out your CPU, check the fans it may be overheating.

Actually Dave makes a good point .... it's possible that the DMA (Direct Memory Access) settings for the Burner drive, have reverted to PIO Mode. If this is the case, this would place a great load on system memory and produce slow downs/ freezes.

Check the DMA settings are not set to PIO Mode ..... Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, right click each channel, go to Properties/Advanced.
