I have windows XP. As and when I switch on my computer, it takes some time i.e. approximately 6-8 to start. What is the possible reason and how it can be fixed?

Minutes, seconds what?

I'm guessing minutes yes?
Have you defragged lately?
How many services do have running on start up?
Go to Run and type msconfig
Look under the services tab.
Also tell us how many programs are running.

Has it always been this slow?

Do you have Norton or McAfee antivirus? If so remove it and replace with AVG or Avast, both are free.

Also do a spyware scan with spybot and do an antivirus scan.

It depends on how many softwares are currently installed on your pc as well as the anti virus you are using , firstly try deinstalling the anti virus that will make sure if that was your trouble . Happened with me when i used to use NOD32 ? Also please put up your PC specs so that we can tell a better solution .
