Hey Guys, As you will more then likely realise after you read my question, IT is not my strong point lol!!
Anyway Q, What is the difference between windows xp service pack 1, 2 and three? The reason im asking is i have recently bought a HP 2133 notebook which comes with a linux os and im looking to change it to XP. the only worry i have is that the "copy" of windows i have is XP sp1 and the only guide i can find for insalling windows over linux on the HP 2133 is for installing service pack 2. so what is the difference? and will it cause me any problems? any help appreciated. You'll find it a lot easier if the XP CD and verification code you have are legitimate and hasn't ever been registered to another computer - I'm not assuming it isn't, I'm just giving helpful advice.

The service packs are cumulative. Applying Service Pack 3 to any previous level of XP (like XP + Service Pack 1) will just bring you fully up the moment Service Pack 3 was issued. You'll then have the excitement of adding all the security patches and optional updates which have been released since then. As for the http://h40059.www4.hp.com/hp2133/ HP 2133, are you sure there are XP drivers for all the components? it was released as a Vista machine and the drivers won't be backward-compatible. You might be lucky but I'd not put money on it. My System: Tim

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...&swEnvOID=1093 as far as i no this is all the drivers? it would be great if you could confirm this for me. Ben |

You're definitely right, the current "linux or vista" offer must be recent, they've obviously had that hardware available for XP in the past. Yes, those drivers will get it going under XP with no problem as far as I can tell.

Not sure where you read that m8y, but to the best of my knowledge, spot is correct .... i.e SP3 includes all previosly included updates.

I've never tried, it would be hard these days to find a pre-SP1 copy of XP and re-install it to find out. Ben's is XP+sp1 so it's a somewhat academic question.

I was annoyed because I had just spent forever downloading the stuff (the laptop I was installing on has a broken network card so it was a hassle). I highly doubt it's only the German version that requires it, so I would say all XP installs. |

Did you try to download it from Windows Updates, if so it's probably looking for WGA ..... or did you download it seperately.
According to M$ it includes all previous updates see here I take it this is a legal copy of XP <cough> Either way, benst90 does have SP1, so it shouldn't be an issue for him. |
