Default writing a game engine, or studying a worthwhile programmig language

Okay, we've seen the adverts. Playstation 3 and XBOX 360 next generation titles. Games like Haze, Red Faction Guerilla and even Crysis for the PC. Now the engines behind the nextgen titles are pretty incredible especially if we're looking at realism. I personally want to get a bit more involved with the action. I'm a gamer, I love games, who doesn't right. Well I want to start getting to grips with this more avanced technolgy. For awhile now I've been studying different game engines and a wide range of programming languages, but the question still remailns what am I trying to accomplish here, what is my goal? Does anybody here have similr ideas, like you just wanan develop something really unique and special, but you just don't know what road to go down. So share with me your ideas and opinions, because I really need the advice. Thanks.

Start modding commercial engines - learn scripting first, to familiarize you with basic logic (XML-ish stuff, conditionals, inheritance), then try doing some work on stuff like the Q3 engine (which is open source iirc), study some C tutorials if the latter doesn't make much sense.

Writing a game engine is something only super-advanced programmers will be able to do. It involves very low level memory management and a very good grasp of graphics technologies (esp. OpenGL/DX).
