Hello all!
I'm a long time computer user (first computer was a Commodore 64 in 1984), and recently became an IT Technician for a Community College in Alaska. I get the chance to work with over 50 PCs, an aging network, a Meridian PBX, and make sure they and their users all keep running smoothly! I use almost all flavor of OS's, although most of the college's machines (mostly Dells) are running XP Pro, with a possible upgrade to Vista Enterprise sometime in the next year. So, as a SysAdmin, I'm always looking for new info to stay ahead of the nasties that can show up on systems... My personal laptop is an aging Emachines M6805, dual-booting XP (home) and Ubuntu 7.10 (haven't had the chance to d/l the 8.04 yet!). My main work computer(s) consist of 2-3 Dells, an XPS Laptop (P4, 1.25Gb ram), 2 Dell Inspiron 6400s (one running XP Pro, the other a Vista Enterprise/Ubuntu dual-booter) and whatever I take over for the day...

Hope everyone has a great day!

Scott

actually, we're not too restrictive about that.. we've got filters in-place to block porn, hacking tools, that kind of stuff, but we don't block social network sites like Facebook, Myspace, Tribe, etc... although we do try to squash any P2P we find running, like BearShare or Limewire...

I think the problem with blocking them, is there are so many of them, it is almost impossible to get them all unless you are forever updating the blocked list.

Best if you block student to use their own EXE file because i have software proxy on my flash disk. I know you arent going to like that but i use it sometimes for facebook when im bored, but there's internet cafe outside and half hour for 50p, so i might give up software proxy just for my college sake. :)

That doesn't make much sense..

Blocking .exe files would mean WIndows wouldn't be able to load

Software proxies work in exactly the same way as the web based ones, but they normally just come bundled with a load of viruses as well
