Default Introduction: robb7thurston

Hi all!
I surfed in from a series of links, all contingent on MS WinXP.
Nice ta meetya! Have a nice day!
Now I have a Dell Dimension 3000 running XP and SP3, and secured by PC Tools Internet Suite as well as Win Defender.
My interest is, naturally, to secure and keep updated my XP, since I paid solid cash for it and broke my back learning, at one time or another, to drive it.
So I am one of those guys, you know, they are desperately hunting down security and updates for XP and watching carefully the other pasture where Ubunti grazes--is it greener? Should i move there, should i learn Ubunbtu and dual boot like the canny Swiss and Dutch?
No, you need not reply, to my Ubuntu fantasies, it is just my present enthusiasm.
Hey, its a lovely day despite Bill gates, so be joyful!
Very warmest and Best!
robb7thurston
NB FYI Bill and i are neighbors by a few miles. Ya guessed it, i am in Seattle, but, given the chance, would move far from
M$ and his Billness!
Love to all!

Thanks a lot Dave and Alex! I am a sorta compulsive nut. When I got my computer, I learned the basic hygiene: check disk, clean up disk, defragment and search. I realized that i did not have enough security, so I got some names from use-groups like alt. comp. freeware, and installed them one after the other, to see how they ran in the wild. Fine, now I have what i like, PC Tools and Defender.
Just when i am getting lazy and yawning, His BillNess at M$ yanks active support, so i am looking around just like I looked at security, AV etc.
I really am serious concerning Ubuntu, i have the tutorials located, but when i try and download through an easy app. like WUBI or VMWare, i get a crash--in gist it does not work.
It was easy with AV and sec., they all worked, sorta, but this does not work, so i am worried.
I request suggestions of easy approaches to Linux:
Can friends Alex and Dave show me simple ways to use Linux to use:
(1) email systems like Google with all its apps.;
(2)surf the Internet? That is all I do, so spam me with suggestions, i have big ears turned to you.
Spam Me Already!
Thanks and Very Warmest and Best!
Robb

Welcome to CJ!

As Dave said, start a new thread in the right forums with your questions.

Glad you didn't just go with the typical Norton Bloatware for AV! Good on you for trying things out first.

Thanks Server Guy;
Actually, vis-a-vis Norton and McAffee, btdt. My service connection provider is Qwest and they hooked me with McAffee, and I got all tangled up and DID NOT know computer hygiene. My brother, an otherwise fine fellow, has a MS in Electronics and swears by Norton so I went there=btdt. When i learned computer hygiene, someone tipped me off to the Norton removal engines, likewise for McAffee, and boy howdy, performance increased, as you guessed.
The google groups like alt.comp. freeware sing the gospel of Try-It-And See. And they teach computer hygiene, so I survived, learned something and am very grateful to the trolls and the educators at the Google groups. Hip hip for trolls who teach you!

Here Serverguy, i found a few of the usenet groups which are not polluted by M$ machinations. Read on, please:
alt.comp.freeware newsgroups
alt.comp.freeware (ACF)
alt.comp.freeware.games (ACFG)
alt.comp.freeware.discussion (the chat room)
alt.comp.freeware.gdp (inactive)
alt.binaries.freeware (related binary newsgroup)
I have followed these Google-usenet groups for a couple of years and there is, of course, the occasional flame war, but to balance the heat there are some very learned friends who write in very freely. Such as professors at Malware University and some other academic venues, or professional IT people, really nice folks, who love to assist.
Then there are also some usenet groups with Microsoft in their names:microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics, and several more, M$ itself hosts a few venues such as a place where their vaunted experts profess the Bill Creed, and also a general service forum. Finally last but by no means least, freelance outfits like this one, quite a few, and also Yahoo groups dedicated to computers, and MS groups dedicated to computers.
I thank them one and all with the exception of Pope Bill, who can jump into Lake Washington.
Best and warmest Best!
Robb
