One of the easiest ways to build up back links for your web site is through directory submissions. With so many free directories out there this is the first place I recommend all of my clients to start. With the proper list, one can build up to 1,000 key word rich back links in less than a few months and in the process assure that their site wll be indexed.

For more inofrmation feel free to PM me!

I agree, its a cheap and effective method, although building links too fast can get you penalised.

I think building links in directories is effective, but the most traffic I've ever got was coming from google news and Newsletters. I receive some 56% of my visitors (about +/- 4600 per day) from google news page. You just have to optimize your titles (I'm talking about news articles) and follow the traffic they bring. you have also to browse the existing articles on google news, and look into the most pertinent ones :) That's the game I play and my boss is very happy about the some 20 to 30k page views per day. I am planning to get my own website now :D

Be interesting to see the traffic rise with the new vBSEO mod installed on this forum.

It uses Link-Back technology which is basically like blog and ping but way more advanced.

Directory link building is all well and good but the likes of Google, Yahoo etc. do not rate you highly for it. I've been dabbling in SEO for about 7 years, managed to get my website into the top 3 results for our search term, (number one in the UK) and the majority of the links we had were link backs from bands who's cd we'd reviewed.

Think about it like this; If Google thinks a person decided to link to your site, you'll get rated higher.

Yeah...

I wouldn't rely on them for competitive keywords.

I have good results for niche terms like 'computer repairs aylesbury' for example.

Directory submission helps your site gain some exposures. But this is not enough to bring your desired traffic. Undoubtedly web directories especially those with hig PRs can boost your site as they are regularly visited by search engine spiders. No wonder webmasters would like to have their sites listed in DMOZ.
