Default Cost of a real SEO expert?

As I've mentioned elsewhere on the boards, I've just acquired a client who is after a well-developed web shop. This will also include some fairly intensive SEO work under supervision, but essentially I am looking for a real expert with a proven track record.

Any recommendations on where to find such a person? I am a little wary of DigitalPoint given some of the reputations knocking around and would prefer somebody that lives and breaths Google statistics if you get what I mean.

Also, any ideas on what I will be paying for this? I am well prepared for mid xx/hour, though much more and I think we will need to rethink our plans.

Thanks for any advice you can give me on this.

I just want to say be careful when choosing someone to do some SEO work for you, as you might have read in my thread that I got ripped off. Also I learnt that it's not hard to do it yourself it just needs time.

Just my two cents.
