Does anyone know of any decent free hosts that don't lock you in to staying with them?

A friend on the course I'm doing has bought a domain name, but doesn't have a host for it yet. She was under the impression that when you got a domain name a site magically materialised, completed, for you (I'd love to speak to the business advisor that managed to get her thinking that!).

Anyways, she doesn't want to pay out for hosting at this moment in time - she's feeling a little stung about 'this whole internet thing' and I was going to offer to do a site for her as a favour, and then if she liked it, and could see potential, she could move it over to a paid host at a later date.

If I had a reseller account with a slot free I'd host it there, but as I don't at the moment I've been looking for a good and reliable freebie.

Does anyone have experience with any free companies that allow you to have a domain with them, and offer a mySQL database, and support for PHP or Perl?

Theres no such thing as a "decent free host" :P

You can check ww.hostmatrix.org . It has been offering free webhost for quite sometime now. The package consists of PHP and MYSQL. All you have to do is signify your interest to own one thru its forum. There no annoying ads or whatsover on your free account.

I don't know if there are any decent free hosting companies. I guess I have high expectations when I'm launching a site. I can't have free banners on the page. I want viewers focusing only on my content. I know they have to make their money too so I opt to pay for hosting.

Godaddy has a very cheap plan (about $4):

arial, helvetica, sanserif]Economy Plan: • 5 GB Space • 250 GB Transfer
• 500 Email Accounts • FREE! Software
• 10 MySQL Databases • 50 Email Forwards
• Forums, Blogging, Photo Galleries • No ads

Well, I took this from my own front end, but it is the same thing.

About free... I once put something in fsphost | free webspace hosting

but only plain old htm accepted, no php, sql, perl or anything.
