Hey guys, not been around for a week or so, I've been traipsing around Longmoor, shooting and stuff exhausting, but anyway here's the issue:

I'm looking into setting up a website, that I could hopefully get some cash on an affiliate program or something.

So I looked into cheapy domains (I'm not to serious about it, it's only an experimental type deal, so I don't want to spend much on it) and something hit me which I didn't understand.

Do I want a hosting plan?

If I do which package do I want?

I don't have a clue how to answer those questions, what is it??

I thought I could simply rent a domain, and upload from FrontPage or whatever.

Someone enlighten me

Cheers, Ollie.

Yep, you need a domain, hosting and a website to upload.

We host with layershift, their cheapest plan will do you to get started.

Is it actually neccessary though?

Another site I was on gave the options:

No thanks
Budget
Starter
Proffessional
Buisness
Buisness Extra

So why would though offer not t give a hosting plan if it's compulsory?

And I tried layershift, but whenever I selected the domain and clicked order or whatever it was it came back and said "Please select at least one domain" so I went back, chose 5 and clicked order, it said same again..

You need hosting in some form, period.

You can just order the domain from one company and host with another, so that is why you get no thanks option.

Some companies offer hosting free in exchange for advertising, some offer free hosting if you use their platform. ie; wordpress.

I can get one of the layershift sales team to email you if you want, hosting is a minefield and you really should choose a company off the back of a recommendation.

There are more cowboys in hosting than any other industry imo.

Oh ok, thanks.

So does layershift tie me into using their sown software for creating the site, or can I just use FrontPage, as that's what I'm most familiar with?

You can use whatever you like, you get full FTP rights.

I've put several clients on compila.com, their bottom of the range linux deal is cheaper than layershift's, and includes the domain name. UK based, I've found them reliable and helpful.

PS FrontPage is one of the worst web design packages around. The only ones worse are those which are not web design software, but offer a save as html option. They are almost uneditable by a human to add extras, such as special effects, javascripts etc.
