Default Fantastico Killing the Trade?

I've noticed a lot of hosting packages coming with Fantastico these days, and it really annoys me. I don't understand the drive towards 'easy install' and automating everything.

It seems everyone these days has a phpNuke powered web site, or a subSilver skinned phpBB forum. Where is the skill in that?

Does anyone else long for the days when you had to be able to read instructions, ftp files, chmod and edit a .htaccess file to be able to install a script? Seriously, it wasn't even that complicated back then.... what happened to reading help files? When did things HAVE to be automated?

These easy install systems are great until you want to break out from the norm or fix any problems. Your better off starting from the ground up then you'll know how to fix stuff.

It's more of productivity reason. Fantastico takes care of the nitty gritty of the installation process which may take off some of your precious time. You can then focus on building your site and content which really matters.

Hi quinda,

I agree with webcrawler.

i love fantastico. Love it, love it, love it!

Have you ever tried to install and keep running 50 websites at the same time?

About the way it makes things easier... lol it is true, but only partly. You can have the site up and running filling a timy form, but to make it really your site you need to work and learn tons of things. Most of the scripts are open source and that means buggy, some show vulnerabilities from time to time and need to be patched out of fantastico or you get hacked, customization implies getting the hands dirty and code in php, the templates need a good deal of css, and the list goes on.

I personally welcome everything that makes my life easier. One thing is true, you should get your hands dirty and learn how to do the hard way first, and then use the capabilities of the system if you are a purist. :)

In my case... I live of the people that don't want to get their hands dirty, so i can't really complain.;)
