Advertising.

Do a Google search and the sponsored listings are people who have paid to be there.

Also have a look at the navbar at the top of this page, people pay Google to be there also.

As Dave Hybrid said, I want to add some more.

Google earns money not only from Adsense and Adwords, but also earns money from its other side business ( that they have acquired time to time).

Recently google has bought a online advertising company called doubleclick for 3.1 billion dollars !!!

Yeah adverts earn money, that's generally how it works LOL.

However the site is in debt, getting it off the ground and the ongoing costs are not cheap.
