Its would probably be best to gather many back links at one time, and then add a large mass amount of them at that one time. And then after whilest they are effecting your staus, keep adding more and more.

I think you're asking how often Google recalculates the value of backlinks, which goes on to affect your PageRank. Is that right?If so, there's usually one every few months, I think usually 3 or four of these datacenter updates in a year, and people tend to notice PageRank changes around these times. What tends to happen is your site PageRank fluctuates and then stabilises after a while.I have heard some rumours that Google was working to make PageRank more dymanic so that there wouldn't be such a long period between updates, but this is mostly speculation! From my sites, it doesn't seem to have happened yet!

It's completely not true. You cannot buy your way to a position in rankings. You can buy ad space that'll show you above the search engine results, but the results themselves cannot be bought.

How foolish would that be? Eventually the top few pages will be purchased results and SEO becomes non-existant.

It's not just about quantitiy it's about quality. Say you have a thousand backlinks from angelfire pages that no one ever see's, big deal...you're linked to by poor websites that Google barely looks at. If you've got 10 linkbacks from sites like Digg, BBC, Sky etc, big popular sites, that'll affect you greatly.

And even then, there is no fixed number of backlinks you need to get to a certain page in Google results. QUALITY not quantitiy
