now how do those guys have internet connection? so technically your saying that everyone is paying to connect to each other?

i think before we can answer we first need to know how computers connect to eachother via internet. it cant just be one huge lan connection. there has to be more complex things that we dont know. i dont think we pay to be able to connect to other computers, we pay to be able to find other computers.

Those people physically lay down the cables that connect the hubs together, yes. The infrastructure isn't free.

Basically, theres a whole bunch of cables, running all over the world. These are maintained by the major big boys, like in the UK by British Telecoms.

Then theres a whole bunch of other ISPs, like Virgin, who have some of their own cable infrastructures.

However, at some point, they need to connect back to the 'big daddy' cables, to get across the world.

The 'big daddy' companies basically are a bunch of cables running around the world, connected by some of the biggest routers imaginable, that ensure that traffic gets directed down the right wires.

So there costs are the cables and the routers.

Then the second tier people, like the major ISPs pay to use some of the big companies bandwidth, and hence get access world wide.

Then there are smaller ISPs, who basically have a big internet connection come into a building, with a bunch of servers in it to manage the connections, PPP etc, which are then connected to the boxes at the end of your street.

Then from the box at the end of your street, it gets fed into your house, and you pay for it.

That, as they say, is basically that.

No problem pest. And I think serverguy said it well.

Think of it as a network of toll roads. Some loaded company builds the motorway between two places, then charges a toll, then smaller roads come off that, and a smaller toll is charged, and so on. As it filters down the speed gets slower and the price cheaper.
