There will be something in your router's config pages about DMZ and/or port forwarding. You will need to either put your machine in the DMZ or forward port 80 to your machine.

Beware! You make your machine visible to hackers!

Thanks for the reply my foot has started to inch away from the harddrive.

Ah, well there may be problems then.

Unless your ISP has given you a fixed IP address, you will not be able to do that.

If you do have a fixed address (which is visible on the status page of your router) you go back to wherever you registered your domain name and set it up to redirect to your IP address.

You can stick it in httpd.conf too but not sure if that achieves anything!

It will be in your broadband contract.

you can create a static IP for port forwading for free. it shows you <Link hidden. Register for free to see this link!>. just choose your rooter and it tells you.

With respect, I don't think the author of that article has got the idea of dynamic IP addresses! If my router is assigned address 1.2.3.4 by MyISP and then MyISP assigns the same to yours, and then I make 1.2.3.4 static, we will both have the same IP address, a recipe for chaos. (Not that MyISP would actually approve my static IP anyway unless I paid for it!)

You may get away with it for a while, but sooner or later it will go wrong.

However, the Apache server on the local LAN should be given a static IP so that its port 80 can be forwarded.

I know they conflict, when it does you just re-assign a different static IP, I use it for my port forwarding on various programmes.

EDIT

I have been using the same static IP since I set it up 6 months ago and so far no conflict has occured.

Hi There,

I'm not sure why you are interested to use your machine as a host. Rather buy a hosting package from any hosting company and upload your files to that hosting account, point your domain and that's it .... you are done!

Buying a static ip is more expensive, you have to keep your computer running 24X7, make it hacker proof .... etc.

Trust me ... go for my advice.

Best and cheapest hosting company is <Link hidden. Register for free to see this link!>
