Learn CSS also, you would need how to make .psd templates and then coding them in HTML and CSS. Also PHP would be usefull.

Yeah, I'd second that... in 90% of my websites, I only use CSS and XHTML, I have used php in a couple of websites and when you learn it, it a very useful language. Regarding HTML, its great but if you learn how to slightly adapt your HTML into XHTML (which is basically the same thing just a few tweaks) it will be more compatible with future browsers etc.

Your best bet is to find an online curriculum because you seem not to have a handle on what the aspects of designing are.

well basicly php is a server side language and enables you to show different pages to different people based on anything you want.
it is free to use
and is used widely on the internet and so you can get alot of help with it
www.php.net for more information

i have never used the other coding languages that can do the same sort of thing as php because php has suited my needs completely and is ever changing with new versions

hope this helps

.net is also free to use and develop (see the express editions of Studio 05), ok fair enough the Server licence is quite steep. Tighly couples the page design to the code behind, offers the lowest line count vs. functionality, offers the nicest development environment, bought in support for themes, control adapters and master pages. If you're getting into web design to maybe get a job at the end of it, you'lll need at least a degree for 80-90% of the jobs out there to make any decent cash.

I agree with aquariancore find out what you actutally want to do, i.e. just design (then HTML,CSS, some photoshop skills is the way forward, or develop (some sort of higher level language is required + some rudimentary database skills). Been a developer for some time now and there is plently of crap ones out there making good money, so learn to bullshit too.

I agree with what mr_miller says, 80-90% of jobs do require a degree. But doing some freelance web design has made me more cash than I could have ever earned doing it for someone else. The web design industry is very competitive, if you want to earn alot from it, you will need to be very good at it. I prefer to do it as a hobbie on the side to pay for the luxuries in life :)

I began learning HTML using templates and free services provided by webhosts such as GeoCities and angelfire. CSS is definitely the next step - enables you to format and style web pages effectively, and is very useful especially if you think you may need to update a website in the near future.

Am now well into learning what is know as a 'server-side language' - PHP alongside MySQL. Capabilities of this language are awesome and I aim by the end of the year to establish a fully automated web system (data-driven website)

I can also add that the best way to learn is through the net without a doubt. You can go and pay for books, lessons etc. but having free assistance online and tutorials has been my best learning curb. I am at University right now, and can clearly say that I have learnt more by myself than I have being taught by professionals. All depends on how dedicated you are.
