I am about to buy some web design software but have not yet chose one, so could anyone tell me whether to buy dreamweaver or frontpage and explain why?

I use Dreamweaver and it is a very professional tool, the best.

As far as I know Frontpage is more aimed at beginners.

Usefull Web Design Software - Microsoft Expression, Adobe dreamwever 8, CS3 and Fireworks can be usefull, FrontPage has been replaced by Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007

No true professional uses FrontPage, as it does things its own way and can create code which is almost impossible to understand, especially if you wish to add some special effect and need to edit it by hand.

I've heard good things about MS Expression (but missed the free download time limit by one day, unfortunately!)

I used dreamweaver before I converted to mainly hand coding. My old copy of DW doesn't interpret floated divs very well unfortunately, and I now only use it to add content rather than build from scratch. I do use the code view for hand editting though, and its built in FTP is better for web designers than any ftp program, as it knows to include the images and scripts and css files (but if you've only altered the text of an existing page, you can skip uploading these files as well), and knows which files belong in which folder. And if you rename a file, it checks all existing links to the file and updates them too.
