text pad. (notebook) jkKwrite or Kate (google it) have html markup so they will work and ive used them for coding in multiple languages and have never had a problem.

If you know html then the best free html editor is http://www.chami.com/html-kit

If you don't know html then macromedia dreamweaver is the only way to go worth mentioning but it isn't free

Actually it a more it can to xhtml and Css and PHp.

best HTML editor has got to be notepad, preinstalled on most machines and you can program most languages in it.

for me it has to be notepad. i am not a nexpert in web designing but notepad has to be the one for me.
