It stands for Pagerank. This is google way to measure the importance of a website. It ranges from 0 -10 by which 10 is the most important and popular. The measurement has many criteria from keyword optimization, relevance, inbound/outbound links.

Pagerank is very important attribute in terms of search engine for any website. Think about it. You have created a new website. But very few people might have known it. On the internet the website must be known to every corner of the world. How do you know whether your website is known to many people. Pagerank in terms of 0-10 indicates the popularity and appropriateness along with the hits that the site gets.

You can use the pagerank as a loose measure of how you are doing, but I would not be overly concerned with your page rank. Build a quality site, and good things will happen for you in time. Patience.

PageRank is a complex mathematical score assigned to a page based on how many other pages link to it and the pagerank of the pages linking to it. If an page with a high rank links to you, you get more points than if a page with a low rank links to you. It's logarithmic, so you need about ten times as many link points to go up one PR point.

Pagerank is just ONE of many many things google uses to score your site. I had a site with a pagerank of ZERO coming at No. One in google.co.uk, ahead of pages with a pagerank of 6. The site now has a pagerank of 4, and still comes above many with higher pageranks. Because PR is just one of many things used to calculate where you appear, not the only thing used. Any page with a page rank of 5 or more is doing well and has lots of links, usually including links from other good sites. But still people get all excited about getting a high page rank, as if it is the only thing that matters (probably because it's the only thing that google use whose value you can get at however). The google toolbar will show you the page rank, and several web sites have a tool that calculates it for you.
