i've tried yahoo web hosting, godaddy and mediatemple, im happiest with mediatemple, also in terms of scare stories, every host has them, we all make mistakes and also companies are looking to cut competition so you will be hearing scare stories, yahoo is comparatively very expensive for hosting, i don't know how costs are now but when i hosted with them a year back they were relatively very expensive however i went for yahoo as they were an established brand. Also yahoo is a reseller, godaddy is pretty good, i never had any trouble with them for a year though there are tons of scare stories and anti-godaddy websites around, mediatemple has been great too. Fast ftp and good feedback not to mention several big names hosting with them so you can feel secure with mediatemple.
