I thought this should be easy, ethernet cable from modem to 360 - power cycle and it should work? not for me!

i got my other half a 360 for christmas and have been meaning to connect it up to xbox live for the fallout extras for ages and thought i would do it today as a surprise........ how wrong was i!

i have been through all the xbox set up screens and troubleshooters, tried static ip, tried running it through my router, and direct to the modem but i still can't get an ip address or it can't use the static address, i have unplugged and replugged, turned everything on and off in every order possible.

i can connect both my pc and very crappy laptop directly to the modem with no problems.

i really don't want to shell out for a wireless adaptor as the xbox is next to the modem and its unlikley we will be using the pc at the same time.

The modem is an abit 256? (says on the bottom) on virgin media.

Any ideas? am i missing something really simple? many thanks in advance!
