Play TF2 instead. CSS is fun in moderation but it's one-dimensional and often frustrating, limited to a whopping two maps half the time, and has specific weapons everyone uses that crowd out the rest. TF2 is the best multiplayer FPS in recent history.

I play TF2 and I can say it is the best multiplayer game I've played. Second for me would be L4D, but it's not all that great. If you want campaigns, L4D has campaigns, but TF2 doesn't.

CSS is starting to look seriously dated too, TF2 is goodish, could never get into it myself though

If its just a single player FPS you could try FEAR 2, Frontlines-Fuel of War or even Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 and none of them are are to demarding on the pc specs

counter strike (steam) is one of my games i play alot at times! graphics are not amazing but it runs very good on old computers.. you can download maps/skins and so on for free from>
http://www.fpsbanana.com/
100's of maps too and there is loads of server you can join to play online against friends and random players as well as a lan multiplayer
i can turn all grahics to full with my system specs and get no problems thought i couldent configure a joypad fully..but i like to play with keyboard/mouse anyway

also consider downloading (game booster) free from here>
http://game-booster.en.softonic.com/
it turns off services not needed meaning better performance for when i play games

I won't have the steam virus on my computer. I never played a steam game that was worth the hassle of it. As for FPS? Try the COD series. The online servers are great.
