I'm often playing games that do not have their own FPS counter built within them. I am wondering if there are any external software I can run in the background that will record my FPS while I am gaming?

Well I think Fraps records the FPS, but it also slows down your computer, howecer Xfire, which is a gaming messenger, can show the FPS in the corner of the screen whilst gaming, however doesn't record it.

Fraps doesn't slow down unless you're recording.
Just use it, it'll show you.
