Who does either? I love PC games and have been playing them since they came out. To say the progress from when I started to what is out now is amazing would be an understatement. Try to compare Crysis with a "game" that consists of words on a screen that says exciting things like "you come to the end of the hall. you can enter a door to the left or one to the right. Type R for right and L for left.........
Anyways, who mods and how do you get started? How about designing a game? Are game engines proprietary or can you "lease" them as it were? I know several games used the original Doom engine and others run off of their own. Every game i have bought recently has "factory supported" mod tools. I've seen game home sites where the developers will actually interact with modders and help them out. one had an online class as it were. |

I started out by using Source SDK to make maps for servers i played on in HL2 DM. Its a great by to start and its free. it becomes very easy when you get the hang of it. I remember when i was about 3-4 years old, and i played Mega Race on windows DOS. To me a great looking game isnt so much the greaphics, but instead realistic movements and animation of the body and surrouding. you can make a banana look like a banana, but if it looks like a monkey having a seizure when it peels, then it looks bad, no matter how you slice it. I will be desining my own games soon. I have a team of friends who are just as into it as i am. The details on the game and story line are something we decided no to share with others (dont want someone taking my ideas). But what i can say, is that what we have in store, has never been done in any other game so far. All of our games will be extremely uniqe, and from what we have so far, they will take about a week of solid game play to beat everything in story mode. You will see and be able to do things in multiplayer that have never been done before. I cant wait to get collage level education for this.

I'm lead scripter on the Dawn of Victory mod.
Good way to get started is to just pick something up like mapping or scripting or something, build a portfolio doing it freelance for modding, and break in that way.

That looks cool Carbon. I merely glanced at it but will peruse it further later.
Cheese, you are driving me batty dude, it's collEge lol. Use your spell check. Ah the hell with it, I rarely do either. The games sound cool, run with them. Have you an animator to draw the crap up for you? No, I'm not looking for a job lol, I can't draw, just checking. I don't care that much for any of the half life games. Yeah they have some interesting features, but to me, they basically suck as far as game play is concerned. Personally, I'm not so interested in what I call Nintendo problems, (how well you learn to operate computer or console keys for weird ass movement) as I am in a good storyline and challenge. For instance. I'm playing the new S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game. I have the run key and the use a bandage key close to each other. If I hit the bandage key when I want to hit run, I not only don't run, but I waste a bandage. In real life there is no way I would waste a bandage when I actually was wanting to run. I'm not a programmer, but I have played too many games where if I hit the bandage key by mistake it says, "you don't need a bandage" or something like that, it doesn't waste precious recources because of a typo. I don't want to have to use both hands and feet to hit some weird keystroke combination while my tongue is just in the right position so I can complete a level. To me that's retarded. Anyways, my wife and supper just got home lol. Later. |

Statistically im in the top 9% in my state for writing fictional stuff ( i think it was the ISAT?) but my spelling is horrible. Never could get good at spelling. don't know why. I'm into story line more than anything else. And my friend is studying to go more in the area of Game Concept are design, so i have that covered. And i don't mean like using the Wii to move things, i mean the actual motions the characters in a game do. aka, there will be a lot of motion capturing going on. most likely in the 1000's as far as stored motions go. As for file types, I know many people look at the programs files, so i wana do something like make the file extrention something like--- .lol .omg .wtf .rofl ya know, stuff like that, so when poeple come to look at the files, they will be thinking what they are reading (as far as file extensions go anway)
