Stuff running in the background maybe, antivirus etc.

nah, thats not it. I have the same things running that i have had running in the past (which is pretty much nothing).

You might be hosting some Trojans or be carrying some spyware, you might want to ask Evil Fantasy for a little help in that category, also how much ram are you using, for gaming i wouldn't go anything under 2gb, Also do you have all the latest drivers for your Gcard?, And one last thing you might want to download a program with a tool allowing you to view all open programs/apps and let you choose which to end for better performance.. PS have you changed your res lately?

I play css fine with 348mb of ram

No, I have an onboard graphics card. I'm playing with really low specs.
