Yesterday I installed the new patch for the game Call of Duty 5. Now I have no sound. In the game I click the sound options button and it is showing Stereo. I have 5.1 surround (it all worked correctly before the patch). It will not let me change the speaker settings, it displays the message: "To change speaker configuration you need to change the default playback device in your windows sound setting and restart the game." I am using Vista 64 and have onboard Realtek audio instead of a sound card. When I right click on the Windows speaker Icon there is an option for "playback devices" so I click on it. I get to the first image attached below. Clicking the configuration button I get to the second image attached below which shows 5.1 surround highlighted. Am I following the correct steps to "change the default playback device in your windows sound settings"? Notice in the first image that audio speakers is checked. If I am doing everything correctly then I guess I need to contact the game manufacturer, but if I am doing something incorrectly then I need to know how to do it correctly lol. *NOTE: I'm putting this in the OS section because the question is if I am correctly trouble shooting the problem in my OS (Vista 64), not how to get the stupid game to recognise that I have done the correct steps. I guess it could go in sound, but it is not a hardware problem, the game says it is a windows problem, lol I think it's the patches probelm but as I stated I want to be sure I'm manipulating my Vista correctly. Oh, I DO have the latest drivers for my Realtek, i just checked. ![]()

Just the one game, that's why I am sure it is the patch. I just am not sure if there is some "default setting" for games somewhere in Vista I am not finding. I have checked the default programs, but don't see anything that would be hampering the game, and of course I went through the Default Playback Device thing as I outlined above. No one else I talked to on the Game servers has had a similar problem with the patch, and I'm not finding anything online yet. that's why I want to make sure that it isn't something I'm missing in a Vista setting.

Ok, so I did look at the correct place in Windows that the game told me to change? EDIT: Why do I have the computer juice thingies in this post lol? EDIT II: nevermind they are gone now lol. Maybe the problem is I'm seeing voices and hearing visions?

Should have checked back on this Owly, sorry. Yeah I found the solution after I made sure my Windows wasn't messed up. I didn't click your link but I assume it is the retard your sound setting down to 16 bit 44100 Hz fix? Apparently good old Treyarch decided to just blow off the Vista users in their latest "patch". PLEASE BRING BACK INFINITY WARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup, thats the fix. ![]() I agree- Infinity Ward's CoD 4 is SO much better.. Not only is it more polished..less bugs+errors But tbh, I think the actual game (i.e. storyline, gameplay) was better too
