As a lot of you will no anyway, the res in the Sims 2 is 600x800.

I have tried going into the settings through the game (the three dotty things)

And it offers a change of Screen Resolution in a box (yay!)

The Options are (getting really excited now :P)

800x600

and thats it. (oh *!$£*&^%$^£*"*!&"^£%£$&$%"&"*"**£&%$^$&£&"*! ^)

I realise I cant do it through the game but i wondered if someone could tell me a way of doing it through the files for it or whatever.

Thanks, Ollie.

Edit: PS should this be here in PC games? or should I have put it in Graphics and Monitors? oh dear...

what is your screen size in inches and the res? anyway to set your own res go onto the shortcut on your desktop, right click, properties and you'll find "target" next to it is it should say something like "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSBin\Sims2.exe" now type this
-r<width>x<height> so it should look like this:
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSBin\Sims2.exe" -r<width>x<height> where it says width and height put your desired res so to run it in 1024x 768 it would be this:
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSBin\Sims2.exe" -r<1024>x<768>
hope i helped.

If the option isn't available in the game it's likely to be because your hardware doesn't support the res.

Changing files manually to force it is probably not a good idea.

This is a common complaint with nVidia cards and The Sims2.
You can do what xactly says or try this method.
Quote:
If you have the Nvidia card and your screen resolution is stuck at 800x600 after installing Seasons, try this method, it has worked for many people.

Look for the Graphics Rules.sgr file in C:/Program Files/EA GAMES/The Sims 2/Seasons/TSData/Res/Config/Graphics Rules.sgr

Open "Graphics Rules.sgr" in notepad.

Look for "option ScreenModeResolution" and you will see settings for Low, Medium, and High. Copy the medium settings and paste them over the low settings or simply set all the resolution settings to the highest possible for your monitor.
As Dave points out it isnt always a good idea to do stuff like this but many people have this issue and this is the resolution.
Make backups of the original files to save potential problems later

ohh i was so excited that this might be the ultimate solution, but alas, it didn't work. i tried changing the command line, changing the userprops.txt, the csconfig file and the config file. nothing worked. could it be because it boots from a dvd?

If you want to try booting from a hard drive, make an ISO of your disk then mount it. That'll make the PC think the disk is in but read it from the hard drive.

As far as running in 1024x768 goes, The Sims 2 is pretty easy to run but it does get harder as the amount of tat your house ends up with increases. On a 9400GT though, you shouldn't see any problems, I only noticed on a 256Mb laptop chipset :P

This was ages ago I had the problem I havn't played for.. well at least a couple of years..

(And I didn't have my 9400 then)

Also the guy you replied to about not running it from a DVD probably won't ever return. 26th April, his only post, offline since then..

The guy probably doesnt remember his username let alone the password or site address
