 The Sims 2 will not play - "Please ensure the sims 2 disc is in the drive" - Error

my sims 2 will not play. everytime i but it in the drive it brings up a pop up message saying please ensure the sims 2 disc is in the drive, select ok and restrt the application. can anyone help me...

Is the disc scratched or dirty?

Does the drive recognise other discs? Does the drive show up in Device Manager? My System: FordyPC
