I'm not exactly sure what to attribute what I'm seeing to. So here's the story from the beginning, complete with a list of specs:

a friend of mine has this laptop:
gateway
intel celeron 2.2ghz or so
integrated radeon xpress 200m
1.5gigs of 667mhz ram
60gig hard drive, 5400 rpm
standard college ultra fast cable internet line

she was running world of warcraft on it with virtually no problems. very little lag. everything was going well until she installed the orange box on her machine. it for some odd reason made WoW unplayable due to what i would describe as hiccups in the connection.

since it appeared that the orange box was creating her problem, she uninstalled it as well as steam, yet the problem still persists. she has tried connecting to the internet from various ports in this dorm, and no connection offers any improvement.

quite frankly i'm baffled as to what might be causing the problem. it's obvious that something is screwy since it was ok one minute, and not fine the next.

any clues?

Has she tried System Restore to at least 3 days before the incident first occurred?

not yet mainly because at this point it's really a last resort. the rest of the computer functions just fine, and sometimes the lag decreases, but only sometimes. it's just that the lag was vastly less noticeable.

a system restore is after we've tried everything to force it into working. for all we know it's just the lan connection that our school offers. that remains to be seen. at least it's spring break so she's going home and she can try seeing if her machine will work ok on a different connection.

if that doesn't work, there has to be something physically wrong with it. because we've practically DONE a system restore by removing one of the only factors that could've influenced the lag spikes in the first place: steam, and the orange box games. we went through and got rid of any and all files.

we even defragged the darn thing for good measure. i'm starting to wonder if a physical part of the machine is failing. but again, that remains to be seen. first we want to eliminate the internet from being a factor because we haven't been able to do that yet. simply testing the same connection from a different port isn't going to take care of it straight away.

it's just that i'm starting to run out of ideas in terms of what might be doing it. is there something that i forgot to check?

if you had read my OP, you'd realize...it's not my laptop. it's my friend's. and now that you mention it, that was another weird thing we found. she told me did a speedtest and it showed that it was really freaking good.
