European PS3s will still be able to play PS2 and PS1 games. But they will do it through software emulation, like the Xbox 360. That means it won't be able to play every game made for those systems, but according to Sony the vast majority should work. Sony dropped the necessary hardware because it was an added expense on top of an already pricey system. This change is likely to spread to all territories where the system is sold, including North America.

Is that true, I cannot see them doing that. I think the Playstation three plays all the playstation two games, I am not sure about the older games. I havn't read that anywhere yet, so I think it un-true.

Usually that because or TVs run on a PAL format and their one run on NTSL format. You change these hardware chips if you know someone who chips up PS2s who does this so the PS2 can play pirate copies of PS2 games. These people are usually the ones who does these things to a PS3.
