I bought THIS FAN, an 80mm fan that moves like 80 cfm or something. Well my PC is pretty cool but its entirely too loud. I was unable to adjust the speed in bios, windows, or any other software based soultion.
It comes with a 4 pin molex, and a 3 pin connector with only one wire. When the 3 pin is used it will report rpms. So i decided to look into fan speed things in hardware form. Unfortunately, they all seem to require 3 pin connectors, and my 3 pin connector only has the one wire. This led me to this product, This here wire, that looks like it may do the trick. But i notice 2 wires are missing from the 4 pin end, and i dont know if that will mess with the fan, cause its molex has 4 pins with 4 wires. I also notice that the fan only has 2 wires going into it from the molex connector, the red and black, which are also the only 2 on the adapter i found. In addition, I'd then like to hook the fan to one of these suggesting the above adapter makes these items compatable. I'd like to order the parts asap and i want to hear from more knowledgable people before i order stuff that will take a few days to come only to find it doesnt work. Please help I'm pretty confused. I had the same problem with my pc, expect with 4 fans, confused wiring here we come! Anyway
Right, the fan you've bought runs at over 5000 rpm, with is crazy fast, making it very loud, but very efficient! The Fan controller you've linked to is perfect to solve this. However, as you've pointed out, the controller only works for 3pin fan connectors, which your fan does not have (well, it does, but not that you can use to power it). So, you need to get an adapter from molex to 3pin. Unfortunately i cant seem to find one on newegg, the adapter you linked to will not work in this case. It can be rewired to suit however, would you be happy to do this? its not going to be complicated. If you are, ill show you how. And to answer your other question. it only has 2 cables because fans run on 12v, molex has 12v and 5v, so it only needs the 12v. |

Aren't 3 pins specifically for speed adjustment? ie. you need a compatible fan, you convert the other way round, but not the way you're trying I'm afraid.

You can get Fan Controllers for Molex, they quite simply regulate the voltage from the input molex, outputting a lessened voltage on the output, depending how you've adjusted it. Probabl the simplest thing you could do is shimmy the wires over on the fan's molex, so that it's taking the 5v juice from the PSU, not the 12v. It'll then run at around half speed, and be a lot quieter. My System: FordyPC

The 3rd pin just reports back the fan RPM, it depends whether the board supports fan speed control.
Fordy; you can get adapters that way around, they often dont have RPM feedback though, but its simple enough to wire it in. I have 12v molex fans on my pc, these connect to male molex to female 3pin adaptors, which plug directly into the fan controller. The controller (as you said) just adjusts the voltage. You could also run the fan at 7v just using the molex, but your PSU needs to be relativly good for that. |

7v is pretty easy though aint it. It is easier, but it doesnt help with the fan controller, as that is 3pin only :-( annoying.
Still, the wiring isn't all that hard, and it makes life a lot easier! i got the adapters i mentioned from Ebay, but i cant seem to see them now... |
