Hi All:
Inadvertently "fried" my power supply (put 240V on receptacle serving computer). I installed an old working power supply and computer boots up, but I'm getting a sound similar to the sirens now used on medical emergency vehicles (or foreign police cars). Sounds like it's coming from the hard drive. Do you have any idea what this may be?
Thanks,
Jim

Sounds like the PSU is too low wattage to run your GFX card, they do that when they are not getting enough power or do not have the power plugged into them, some GFX cards need a power lead as well as being in the slot on the mobo.

Post your PC spec and PSU wattage if in doubt.

Really "dumb" on this end. What is a GFX card?
Thanks,
Jim

Thanks, Dave Hybrid:
No luck so far. I don't have a GFX card...mine is on-board. What I have tried so far is as follows:
  • Unplugged all drives (power and ribbon cables). Reboot and still have beeping signal.
  • Unplugged each hard drive individually (power and ribbon). Reboot and still have beeping signal.
  • Tested power leads from PSU and verified 5V and 12V at all plugs.
  • When booting computer, monitor lights up and displays the mobo logo, but will not continue to boot.
Now, I did not know how to check the multi-wire lead from the PSU that plugs into the mobo, but while checking things, I moved the wiring leading to the mobo socket from side to side and the computer cut off and then back on. Also, I'm not sure I have the proper PSU. It's a spare my cousin had. It's rated at 250 watts and has enough power leads to satisfy my requirements, but that doesn't necessarily make it the correct one. Thanks again for your help and advise.

I wouldn't really bother when a for-sure good one is so cheap - the new computer may have higher requirements, and because generic PSUs may have inflated wattage totals, it's probably easier just to pop a new one in.
