Apologies if posting in the wrong place.

Partner has 6 year old e-Machine PC. Always plugged into a power socket. When not in use the PC is switched off, but power socket switched on. Last night, PC makes strange noises (amplified by speakers) and illumination around PC power button flashes erratically in time to noises. Pressing power button does not stop noise and only way to do this is to unplug.

Power cable changed and PC plugged back in. Noises/flashing starts again. No signal received on monitor and not able to 'power up' PC. This is repeated a number of times until, finally, the button responds and the PC powers up as normal.

PC switched off as usual, and within minutes noises/flashing starts again. PC unplugged for a while. PC plugged back in. Nothing. No noises/flashing. Attempt to boot PC up - doesn't respond to button being pressed. PC unplugged.

Couple of hours later, PC plugged back in. Immediately noises/flashing but still won't respond to button being pressed.

What do you suggest? Is it repairable? The PC contains photo's of my partner's late mother and it would be terrible if they were lost forever.

Any help/advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Stop using it and replace the PSU. I would pull the hard drive to ensure against further damage.

Oh and when removing the hard drive put in an anti-static bag if you have one, otherwuse just a closed cardboard box or something. Away from anything magnetic or electrical, or you could lose all your data.
