Default Does this sound like a power surge?

I went to my home Friday morning and returned to my apartment Sunday afternoon. When I arrived, I could hear my computer was on (the fans were humming).

The power light was not on. And the monitor showed nothing.

Pushing the power button will not shut off the computer. I can open/close my CD/DVD drives, but with nothing on my screen, I can't even begin to do anything. And the busy light is solid the entire time.

I opened the PC and can see the motherboard light is on and the fans are running. Nothing looks out of the ordinary.

I glanced at my alarm clock and noticed it was flashing; the power must have went out sometime while I was gone.

Before you post, I DID have this machine on a surge protector. And everything else is fine that was plugged into the surge protector.

It's a CyberPower Model #750 7-port Surge Protector.

Should I assume that's what happened? Is there anything I can do to find the problem myself, or will I have to take it to a repair center?

Nothing shows up on the screen, and no beeps occur.

My mates PC had this problem, the PSU (300w) had failed, so i put a new psu in (370w), the fans came on, lights came on, but no display, the hdd kept spinning up down repeatedly aswell, making a loud clicking noise, which obviously means its FUBAR'd, hes getting the data recovered at the momemt. I'm thinking it may be a fried mobo, but he says the psu didnt "blown" he just came to turn the pc on and nothing. (and yes he did do the obvious of testing the cables etc.)

When PSU's go they quite often take the motherboard with them.

Thanks. I took your advice and swapped it. The new PSU still wouldn't get the computer up and running.

Took it to the local repair center and they ran their free test; the motherboard was done. :(

Guess I will be purchasing a new PC, as I don't really want to spend the cash ($120) it takes to replace a discontinued mb.

Thank you all for your help!

Sounded more like a fried mobo to me, I had this problem, swapped out the mobo, and the PSU still worked fine. Could be that the PSU was too powerful for the mobo, although this isn't a common problem as far as I've seen. It sounds like brownout, where the power has dipped, rather than spiked. Your surge protector won't stop this from damaging your system. To stop this from happening, you should have a UPS.
