Has anyone ever left a power supply out of the case?

question...i have a slimline series computer...and im about to upgrade the memory and the video card, but obviously the 180 watt supply it comes with wont handle it...

its ridiculously hard to find a power supply to fit in this case that has much oomph to it...

has anyone ever used a power supply...but didnt put it in the tower and left it outside?

possible??

People bench test PCs all the time without even a case so I think that would be fine.

You're going to have cooling issues because the side will be open and have a weird airflow. I'd just buy a new case or do some creative "repairs" with a dremel tool ;)

yeah there is no problem at all at having the power supply outside, but make sure is in a "safe" place, you dont want your cat or dog mess with the wires... xDDD (personal experience talking)

I think it will be fine too. I have done it before.

You could always just bodge a fan over the hole where the PSU used to fit in or cover it over with some metal sheet.

Hell, I sometimes hook drives in PC A to the PSU in PC B with both open! Saves having to remove them when doing data rescue.

I've got that setup on my desk right now with my desktop and a my Linux router. The router's CD Drive is dead and I'm not unscrewing everything just for one time

I agree! Just swap the data cable over and leave the power connected.
