Well, first port of call is a case. As I have a shed load of sata2 hdd's dotted around the place I've decided it's about time I made use of them again.

So this little beauty is what I had in mind.

It's a Lian-li case. It's going in the front room so it has to have a stylish, subtle aesthetic quality about it. Hence going for Lian-Li. It also, due to the puppy, has to go on a shelf so I couldn't go for the typical depth case of around 500mm. This has a footprint of 400mm, which is just perfect.

Just sharing it with the community, let me know what you think. But whilst we're on this subject someone, anyone, talk me out of this. it's just nuts and I want it. But it's nearly £900.

12" motorised touchscreen. I've shown it in Silver to get a better idea of it. But would get it in black.

Oh dude, please don't show pics of the OrigonAE...

I really don't want to go back to rehab...

I like the shape of the Lian-Li though, more towers should look like that. I think my next will be Fractal Design's "Define XL" - relevant here because it has 10 3.5" bays - They can also be rotated from the position shown in pic, to allow airflow from the front intakes.

Haha, thanks for all the help in talking me out of the Origen folks!

The only way I can talk myself out of it is the fact I'll no doubt be selling the system in 6-12 months. This is my typical time of ownership as I'm a tinkerer and builder and get antsy if I have a system too long. If I was better with a dremel and had some metalwork/woodwork skills I'd be modding cases from scratch left right and centre. But I'm useless with a dremel. Best I ever did was mod a side window in the name of 'SAM' and put red cathodes behind it for a client's girlfriend's pc. To this day I swear the 'S' looks like a '5'.

Yup, it truly is a tall case Anthony (67cm) but it's not as big as the Lian-Li V2000 I have upstairs. This has, if I remember correctly, 12 3.5" bays. I going to be turning that into a NAS with a 7" touchscreen to control it as I won't need a monitor.

The Origen is sexy isn't it.....dammit.

Yup, the raven is cool Cheesy, with pre-cursor positive pressure air-flow setup (actually, NOT a gimmic for once. It really does work).

That origen. Am I missing something... It looks confused, is it portable or a desktop, in each scenario the case is either too big to be portable or the screen too small to be a desktop...? Talked out of it?

Okay, pretty much got my spec sorted now. Had a long hard think about my needs for the system and decided on a huge departure from the norm for me.

I've always been into large cases and shouty, look-at-me pc's but as stated in my original post I do need something subtle but also unobtrusive (so the Lian Li case pictured is out ). It also has to have a small footprint. I was looking at HTPC cases but they're either far to shallow and lack effective cooling for a higher-end setup or they're the price of a pc for the case alone....

Intel's I7's are coming down in price now as I mentioned in another thread, the 920 has been discontinued and the 960 and 970 have seen a large reduction in price. But even though I'm a 950 fan I've managed to source an OEM 760 for £70. That's less than half price. Plus they tend to be rather good overclockers, 4.0-4.1ghz on air isn't rare, but for once I'm not intending on oc'ing. I will lose HT but as my primary usage will be the odd game but mostly the internet i'm not going to miss it. If I was encoding all the time then yeah, maybe. Another reason for the 760 is the TDP of 95w at stock, Opposed to the 130w of the I7's mentioned. Now, you'll see why:

    Case

PSU Overkill is underrated. Terrific psu. Modular, which considering the case, is a good idea.

GPU Not released yet but GTX 570 levels of performance for £70 less. I'm gaming less now on the pc but want it there just incase. Plus HDMI has finally been sorted in that it carries audio now, so no more messing about. Hooray.

RAM. Not oc'ing this rig due to the case so I'm not really fussed for timings and frequency. I was going to go for 1333mhz but it costs more nowadays.

    SSD

    Motherboard

And of course the Sammy F3, Win 7 premium 64 and a slot loading Sony Blu-Ray drive. This for the hdd's and we're done.

    Thoughts?

Cheers Cheesy. Really wanted to go for the FT-02b-w as it's a superb case but the footprint was far too large. Still, the 03 ain't half bad.
