ok so this don't really answer your question but 2day i extended the wire of my cathrod so i could mount it under my pc desk so as would light my keyboard up i choped into the wire and added about 2 foot extra on.and now only half the cathrod tube will lite up and it is not as brite as it use to be..i have now tuck the extended wire off and put bk to normal and its working fine now.. just saying incase you have the same idea as me..making the wire longer
must be because i extended the wire the current of the power went down as it had longer to travel..

I expect the problem you had was with voltage drop over the longer wire length.

Had you used thicker wire it would have probably been fine (thicker wire - less voltage drop)

You could have also doubled the wires up. Also make sure the joins were well soldered.

by voltage drop i presume you mean resistance

Sort of yes....

Voltage drop is caused by resistance in the wires (R=V/I)

If you have a thicker wire then there is less of a voltage drop then if you have a thin wire because the thicker the wire the less the resistance.

Cold Cathodes run at high voltages (hence the inverter) so even a small decrease in the voltage will mean they may not light completely.

If you had cut the wire before the inverter and extended it or just used a molex extension I doubt there would have been a problem.
