Hi all,

I have just upgraded my PSU from a 300W to a 400W and fitted it myself (gulp) - there were a lot more wires in the new one and my tower case is not that big, I have clipped them together as best I can but they still seem to be taking up an awful lot of space.

Can someone just tell me whether this will do any harm?

I have made sure to keep them away from fans, but obviously could not see what happened to them when I put the side back on. I'm a really nervous newbie, so be kind!

Neatness is a virtue. If it's possible for a wire to brush against a fan it's as well to do something about it. I'm sure you're running fine today but it's better to be safe.

If you power down, unplug, take the side panel off and consider the unused PSU cables, look around the edges of the case. You might see places to tie the cables off to. Computer nerds use special plastic ties, they're cheap enough. Don't use kitchen bin ties, they're too sharp and they might cut into the insulation. If all else fails try wool or string and cut the ends short. The PSU cables that are in use might tie down too the same way, for neatness.

Some people coil the spare cables and tuck them between the PSU and the top of the case. I prefer cable ties.

All the reason to get a modular PSU :)

Not a big deal, you can shove them into extra HDD bays if your case is set up that way, otherwise just use plastic ties, you can buy hundreds of them at a computer shop for really cheap.

I just realized how badly worded "cut the ends short" is, it refers to the tie not the cable. DON'T cut the cables! Could a mod adjust the wording please and then drop this post?

Don't worry, I wasn't going to cut the cables

Thanks for everyone's advice, I will open it up again and see what I can do. Just go and get my ball of wool...

As long as they are out of harms way and not obstructing air flow then it doesn't matter where you shove them....

Cable ties are good, otherwise electrical tape will do. (Not Sellotape...)
