Well i turned the computer on yesterday to be greeted by a nice burning smell, definately an electrical burn, similar to someone lighting a match. We took the side of the case off to find that the main fan on the back of the computer was not working, however the CPU fan was. My brother and I checked the CPU temperature and it was 43C.
The computer will often fire up, get past the log in screen, then once the said desktop has loaded, it will restart itself. However, it does not show an error message, or attempt to scan the disk for errors like in a manual shut down, it just restarts as if it was asked to. But it only does this the first time you attempt to log on, after the initial restart it behaves as normal. Any ideas? The computer is over 3yrs old now, so its more than likely on its way out anyway, its running an impressive AMD Athlon 3400+ processor (single core) |

I take it by fan at the back you mean the power supply fan. The restarts can be caused by the power supply trying to protect itself. Just replace the power supply. There not very expensive
