Hi. I am looking to buy a new computer and have found a Dell and a Custom build PC.

The Dell has 375w Dual Rail PSU.

The other one has 1000w Five rail PSU.

I need this computer for video editting and animation. I am drawn to the Dell for other reasons but i want to know if 1000w would give substantially better speed and performance.

Does the PSU really make that much difference? Thanks.

It might be more reliable.

It will not however make any difference at all to speed or performance.

Graphics cards aside of which i can't tell you which is better the custom PC just pips it as it has faster RAM.

Are they the same prices?

Hi. The Dell is £50 cheaper than the custom built one.

How much different is the 667MHz to the 800MHz ? Will it make much difference?

Anything noticable.

Does the fact that the custom built one has more power not affect anything?

Firstly, good choice on looking at pcspecialist. A very good company.

Secondly, Dell are only supplying a 375w psu with a 8800gtx, a quad core cpu and 2 hdd's. Err, no. I can't emphasise enough just how silly that is. That psu will have to work it's socks off and i wouldn't be surprised if you got random crashes.

Also, are you sure it's a 375w psu? I've never seen a psu figure quoted like that.

Why raid 0? I understand it's your choice but as you're not gaming why take the risk. Why not go with Raid 1 (mirror). Considering your usage its the best option.

Considering you're video editing its a good choice on the 4gb ram. Don't worry so much about 800mhz ram over 667mhz. With a 4gb bandwidth and the stated usage it will suffice. But also consider the price difference of the faster ram, it ain't much, so why not?

Regarding the second build Pcspecialist only use midi cases, and the top wattage psu's they supply are of a standard atx size (not enlarged such as on the Enermax Galaxy series) so you'll have a lot of heatsinks crammed into a standard psu form factor. In a very small case. With lots of other large components in there also.

Bottom line is it's gonna get hot and noisy as the cpu's hsf (already dealing with a quad core cpu), and the gpu's hsf (already dealing with Nvidia's second to top gaming card) will also have to deal with a lot of ambient heat. On top of that the psu's fan has to contend with heatsinks cooling 1kw of power.

For your build quoted you do not need a 1kw psu. I'd be looking at a 650-700w psu, max.

Hi, are you saying then that the PCSPECIALIST computer looks like the best bet for my needs?

They are both around the same price. Someone on the Dell Forum told me that the dell i was looking at had 375W power and was sufficient for my needs.

Also, when you said 'nVidias second to top' were you refering to the GeForce or Quadro...Many people tell me the quadro will be better for video stuff, but the GeForce is 768MB when the Quadro is just 256MB.

Thanks.

The person on the Dell forum either doesn't have any idea what they're talking about (and should be more careful of their facts before giving out advice) or the pc doesn't come with a 375w psu. Either way, you need to check with Dell should you go that route.

When i said "Second to top" I also quoted "gaming card". The Quadro is not built for gaming. More for C.A.D/editing work, making it ideal for your usage.

Again, don't focus on the 'loss' of ram, for your usage it will make no difference.:)
